Objectives and Strategies

Objectives

The focus of the INP is the neuropathologic study of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system, and muscular diseases.
This includes:

  • Clinical and molecular neuropathology of human degenerative diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, including Alzheimer disease, tauopathies, Parkinson disease and other alpha-synucleinopathies; Huntington disease, olivopontocerebellar atrophies and other causes of dementia and movement disorders; prion diseases; and motor neuron diseases
  • Clinical neuropathology of cerebrovascular diseases
  • Clinical neuropathology of infectious, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases of the nervous system
  • Developmental disorders and metabolic diseases of the nervous system
  • Diseases of muscles with particular attention to primary myopathies

Biobanks

One responsability of the INP is the organisation and management of the biobanks:

  • Brain bank
  • Bank of tumors of the central and peripheral nervous system
  • Bank of muscular tissue
  • DNA and serum bank

Strategies

Clinical practice

  • Neuropathologic diagnosis

Research activities:

  • Study of mechanisms of diseases of the nervous system and muscle to gain understanding about abnormal molecular events and dysfunctional pathways
  • Study of possible early markers of the diseases to facilitate early diagnosis of them
  • Study of putative targets for therapeutic interventions

Teaching

  • Pre-doctoral students admitted in the laboratories
  • Methods for technicians and students
  • Participation in the Master's of Neurosciences program of the University of Barcelona
