Bio Bank

Banks of nervous tissues and biological samples for the study of neurological diseases

Brain banks have been created to obtain, classify, preserve and distribute nervous system tissue and biological samples for research on diseases of the nervous system under very precise ethical settings.
Brain banks are located worldwide and they have proved to be excellent platforms and facilities to help improve our understanding of neurological disorders. Moreover, methodological protocols in brain banks are geared to provide optimal tissue for research under established ethical and legal regulations.

Common neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal lobal degenerations and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, among others, are human diseases not currently encountered in animals. Animal models may serve to understand certain particular aspects of the diseases but they are not exact counterparts of human diseases.

Therefore, human neurodegenerative diseases have to be studied in humans, and brain and biological human samples obtained following generous donation are essential to gain understanding about the mechanisms, treatments and prevention of these human diseases.

The Institute of Neuropathology covers the following banks:

  • Brain bank
  • Bank of muscular tissue (biopsies)
  • Bank of tumours of the central and peripheral nervous system
  • Bank of DNA
  • Bank of serum and blood cells
