Service presentation

The Nephrology Service of the HUB deals with nephrology care of some areas of Barcelona Health Region (Alt Penedès, Garraf, Anoia and Baix Llobregat and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat). This task is carried out in co-operation with Nephrology Assistance Units of Consorsi Sanitari de l’Anoia and Hospital and Hospital Moisès Broggi, Consorsi Sanitari del Garraf and ambulatory hemodialysis centers located in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Fresenius Medical Care and Diaverum) and in Martorell (BBraun). In addition, we are centre of reference for kidney transplantation to Terres de l'Ebre and Camp de Tarragona regions.

Important aspects

  • Reference Centre for CSUR paired-donation kidney transplantation.
  • Deceased donor and live donor kidney transplantation. ABO incompatible transplantation. Desensitization techniques. Donation after circulatory death (DCD) kidney transplantation. Kidney transplantation in highly sensitized recipients.
  • Diagnosis (including renal biopsy) and treatment of primary renal diseases and systemic autoimmune diseases with biologics and plasmapheresis.
  • Diabetic nephropathy, chronic kidney disease and hereditary nephropathies integrated care
  • Patient information and education program in renal replacement therapy techniques (transplantation, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis)
  • Vascular Access Unit (FAVBELL)
  • Chronic hemodialysis Unit. Online hemodiafiltration
  • Peritoneal dialysis program, including treatment of congestive heart failure with peritoneal ultrafiltration
  • Treatment of acute renal failure with continuous techniques in critically ill patients
  • Hypertension consultancy: refractory and secondary.
Activity and Results 2016

The number of kidney transplants was 133. There were 108 transplants performed from deceased donors (31 DCD, 2 combined liver-kidney) and 23 from live donors (3 pa four ABO incompatible) with an accumulated experience of nearly 3,000 kidney transplants. We are following more than 1,200 patients with a functioning allograft. Patient and graft survival at one year are 96.5% and 89.9%, and at 5 years 87.4% and 72.5%, respectively.
There were 1,221 hospital discharges with an average stay of 6.2 days. There were 1951 new and 13,536 follow-up visits to the outpatient clinic.
We included 171 incident patients on hemodialysis with 47.9% of arteriovenous fistula as a first vascular access. There were 62 active patients on peritoneal dialysis. Our chronic hemodialysis program capacity is 43, including patients requiring isolation for transmissible diseases. We performed 4917 hemodialysis sessions in patients hospitalized. In addition, our Hemodialysis Unit carried out continuous dialysis techniques in intensive care units (172 treatments). We also did 105 sessions of plasmapheresis and immunoadsorption.
