Hospital's present and future

Reorganizing the ICS

2007 to 2010 was the starting point of many changes at the Catalan Institute of Health (ICS). The Institute became a state owned company and promoted a change on its organizational chart structure, integrating specialized and primary care in 9 areas all around Catalonia.
For the hospital the change meant that the General Manager, Dr. Xavier Corbella, was going to be in charge not just of the hospital management but also of the Southern Metropolitan Management Area of the ICS. The organizational chart change generated a synergy between professional of hospitals (Bellvitge and Viladecans) and professionals of primary care, the result was a more comprehensive and efficient healthcare service to the residents of the southern metropolitan area.

Improvements
The new healthcare management service phase at the HUB (Hospital de Bellvitge) was led by the medical director Dr. Albert Salazar and the nurse director Marisa Ridao.

2007 was the year of the successful implant and subsequent removal of the first artificial heart in the State and it was done by the Cardiac Surgery Service of the HUB. The hospital also refurbished the old cafeteria to house a research center and implemented the computer system SAP, used in all ICS centers.

In the following two years, great efforts were made in the healthcare management service area: increase of scheduled releases, a new programming system that reduced the preoperative waiting time, a new organizational nursing model that increased the role of nurses in health care services allowing them a better follow-up and tracking of patients.

Other measure taken were the start up of the clinical directions, a system launched by the ICS to improve the decision making process, give more management freedom to all professionals, take advantage of synergies, promote territorial integration and improve the medical, nursing and administrative staff relationship. The respiratory tract system disease was the first clinical direction to be established.

Further improvements were the opening of the Acute Geriatric Unit and the Intermediary-Treatment Respiratory Unite.
Certifications and a new impulse to IDIBELL As a result of the hospital efforts, in 2009 the HUB was awarded the TOP 20 Award recognizing the hospital as one of the best in Spain.

In the period going from 2007 to 2010, the hospital has received the State’s recognition by being certified as hospital of acute health care services, teaching and research. Some services, such as the clinical laboratory, have obtained or extended their ISO certifications and the ophthalmology service has been named center of reference in four different pathologies.

At the same time the research center IDIBELL, led by the new Chair of the Board Dr. Xavier Corbella and the new Center’s manager Mr Emila Pola, has reinforced its position by establishing and new more modern and solid structure. One of the achievements of the new board was the arrival of the prestigious epigenetic team led by Dr Manel Esteller.

During this period the president of Generalitat and the Mister of Science and Innovation presented the Biopol a development plan aimimed to attract hospitals, universities, research centers and biomedical research companies to the area surrounding Idibell and the HUB. The new project will have an important impact on the l’Hospitalet de Llobregat urban planning and Bellvitge Hospital will be at the heart of it.
A new techno-surgical building This is also the time of the building of Phase II. The project is a four floor 42,000 square meter building that will house the new pharmacy, sterilization, emergency, examination rooms, day clinics, a new area with 32 surgery rooms, and a new IC and resuscitation unit with 80 beds. The building will be equipped with the latest technology and as of 2011 will allow the hospital to increase in significant manner its services in high complexity pathology cases, its efficiency and its comfort placing it as one of the most moderns in Europe
Infrastructure and facility improvement As a consequence of Phase II the hospital had to extend and improve the already existing facilities such as the nervous system diseases area, the electrophysiology laboratory and the start up of the MPOC Functional Unite. From a technological point of view, the hospital began a new innovation line by incorporating the Da Vinci surgical robotic system.

This was also the year of the launch of new oncological and non oncological functional units, the start of the Heart Attack Code, the beginning of a new kidney preservation project based on the pulsative kidney preservation. HUB is the fifth hospital in Spain in kidney and liver transplant and the sixth on heart transplants. In 2009 the hospital celebrated the 25th anniversary of the first liver transplant.

The hospital is committed to the safety, security and wellbeing of its patients and staff and has established new fire hazard regulations, has restricted smoking within the hospital premises and has improved the access to the hospital by opening bike paths and by increasing the parking spaces for disabled people.

The hospital and its staff are active members of different international humanitarian organizations; an agreement with the Vicente Ferrer Foundation was signed to give medical support in different hospitals of India.
